Students watch the following PowerPoint
Did you know.ppt (There should be music
with this. I hope it plays OK. Be sure to turn up your
speakers. If the music is not working - don't worry. It adds to the
slide show - but is not essential) Please be aware that most of this
presentation was written by Karl Fisch of Arapaho High School, Colorado. A
few of the beginning slides were modified by Mrs. Henry for Gananda
21st Century Skills.doc
This document is a list of topics brainstormed by the students in class after viewing the Did You Know PowerPoint. There may be other ideas that a student comes up with – but the topic must have global, world-wide impact. The topic must be approved by the teacher before student starts research
Globalization Packet.doc
This is a packet of information and worksheets. They must be completed and returned to the teacher. They are due on October 20 for the rest of the class. You would need to check with the teacher to find out if your student can be given and extension.
Globalization Packet - Classroom Model.doc
This is a model that I showed in class to explain to students how they should complete the above packet.
Students should use the Globalization Packet to help them researching. They are required to find 10 sources for their Works Consulted List. At least one source must be a book (either a traditional print book or an online book) And at least one source must be an article from an online database) 3 of the sources must be the articles assigned in class. To access those classroom articles – go to this link:
http://www.gananda.org/library/mshslibrary/globalization.htm
To locate a print book Students can search Gananda’s Library Catalog. To do that from home, simply go to
http://www.gananda.org & choose HS Library Page (from drop down menu marked libraries). The library catalog is online and the link is right on the library page. We have books on SOME topics – but not all. Chances are high that the student will have to find an online book.
To locate an online book. Students should also go to the HS Library Page. This time, click the “search” icon to go to the search page. From the search page, choose “Gale Power Search”. The password is walw_log Enter the topic in the search box and a list of results will come up. The results are organized under tabs. There will be tabs for academic journals, magazines, news, reference, websites etc. All of the results will be good sources. However, to fulfill the book requirement, the student needs to choose an article listed under the “reference” tab. All results listed under the reference tab are chapters from reference books.
To locate an article from a database – Students should choose a good article from Gale under any of the following tabs – journals, magazines, news, and reference. If they do not find anything of use in Gale Power Search (very unlikely) – they can return to the library search page and try EBSCOhost. The user name for that is ghs2 and the password is wflsls. Another online database that can be used is Kids Search. In general the content is easier. The articles are generally Ok for high school students as a general introducation to their topic.
Once student has gathered at least 10 sources on their topic (including the 3 classroom readings), they need to create a “Works Consulted” list with all these sources included. They may do the list using the traditional way we have taught them – using citation slips to help them along. The slips can be found at this link:
http://www.gananda.org/library/mshslibrary/workscitedblanks.doc
Alternatively – they can use EasyBib. This is an online resource that allows students to enter the citation information and it then automatically puts the list of sources in alpha order, puts in the proper punctuation and spacing etc. The student should save the id number that easybib assigns so that if they need to change the list, they can get back to it again online. Easy Bib can be accessed from the library home page. It is one of the links highlighted in yellow.
Students should be reading and highlighting their sources. They should fill out the key words and questions on the library globalization packet. These worksheets should help the student focus their research. Once the globalization packet and the Works Consulted list are all done – they should start taking notes. The classroom teachers have taught traditional note taking. I taught an online variation of that. It is far too complicated to go into via email. If you wish, I would be happy to meet with you to go over the methods.
Research continues. Works Consulted List and library packet are due on October 20. They get turned into the teacher so the teacher can mark them off in the class grade book. The teacher then gives the packet and lists to me so that I can correct them. I return them to the teacher and the teacher gives them back to the students and records the grades in their grade books.
