Irish Debates

This project consists of two separate debates. Each student will participate in one only.

Proposition One-As proven by their economic, political and civil success, the Irish did not face any discrimination of consequence here in America.

Proposition Two- Resolved, as there was more than enough food to feed the Irish people between 1840 and 1855 the resulting famine was a case of Genocide by the English government.

Preparation

Preparation begins with a study of the history of the problem to be argued. Then the debater decides upon specific issues she/he intends to present and the arguments planned for use in support of these ideas.Next comes the task of gathering facts and figures, details, examples, quotes and specifics to prove these arguments. The next step is to try to identify in advance the major arguments your opponents are likely to use. Then find data with which to rebut these arguments. The research material is then organized around the various arguments to be presented. Each team member must prepare a speech on specific issues.

Format

We will be using the traditional format for debates. The debate will begin with constructive speeches of 3 minutes each. Rebuttal speeches of two minutes will follow. The order of speakers will be: First affirmative, First Negative, Second affirmative, etc. Mr. Manske will be the judge and time keeper. Think of the assignment as pleading a case before a judge.

Speech

You are also required to hand in a written form of your speech. Your paper, research and debate will be graded according to the rubric given with this assignment.
