by
Barb Schmitt & Jacquie Henry

 GETTING STARTED

Choose a topic in Science, Social Studies, English – or any other subject that your school teaches.  Pick a topic you know your students are likely to be searching for in an upcoming research project.

We will be using the Gananda Library Research Page at http://www.gananda.org/library/mshslibrary/indexgcl.htm to locate information on this topic.  You can get to this site from ANY computer that has an Internet connection – here at the Middle-High School, at Richard Mann Elementary School, at home - ANYWHERE!

DIRECTIONS

·        Click the Research Databases, Search Engines and Directories (Search Icon) & use the following sources to locate information about your topic:

*   Please Note:  Sources marked with an * are only available to secondary students (at school and at home)

1.      *  Grolier (searches several different encyclopedias at once)

2.      *  Electric Library (searches book excerpts, & magazine/newspaper articles – most in full text)

3.      Empire Link (searches magazine & magazine/newspaper articles – most in full text.   [sas logo] is great for elementary.)

4.      Homework Sites (click the  button at top of the search page.  From there, I recommend BigChalk for students & EdSiteMent or Marco Polo for teachers – all can be searched by grade level)

5.      Search Engines - Click the  at the top of the search page.  Yahooligans & Kids Click are good for elementary.

7.      Research Links – located under the panther  Find helpful links for your research projects.

8.      Library Catalog  - find a book from this library’s collection (minimize the internet window & click Library Catalog)

9.      Area libraries – order a book from another library – yes we can do that for you and also for your students!  To do this, just go back to the library research page  & click Search other libraries [area libraries] on the library home page.
