Welcome First Grade!! 1st grade students have a library class each week and during this time we reinforce the library listening skills learned in kindergarten. Each week a story is read and often these stories are part of an author study that involves learning some biographical information about an author. We explore the characterisitics of an author's books, similarities and differences, as well as how the illustrations enhance the story. The 1st grade curriculum also includes learning literary terms such as main character, genre', point of view. We also study folktales and enjoy books to enhance the enjoyment of holidays. During 1st grade, students still borrow one book at a time. Usually, beginning chapter books are available so that reading skills can be practiced. Once again, the students must bring books back on their library day to be able to borrow another book.
