Third Grade

Welcome to Third Grade Third grade is the first year that students do not have an organized Library class. Instead, each classroom is assigned a Library Book Exchange time once a week. During this visit to the library, along with the teacher, a very short time is devoted to library facts and skills. Students then may browse the library to find both fiction and non-fiction books to borrow. Each third grader is allowed to borrow three books at a time. Students in third grade are responsible for caring for their borrowed books and for returning them either during class time or anytime they pass the library. Third graders are also allowed to visit the library anytime the homeroom teacher gives them permission. During third grade we expect students to start becoming more independent using the OPAC search computers and then using the information they find to locate the books desired on the appropriate shelves. We use simple "scavenger hunt" cards to begin weekly practice in finding a variety of books in several sections of the library.
